The Carnegie Library, built thanks to generous donations from American steel magnate Andrew Carnegie, was inaugurated in 1928 by Gaston Doumergue, then President of France. A true gem of Art Deco, the building is distinguished by its originality, notably the integration of a semi-circular geometric shape into its architecture. Architect Max Sainsaulieu collaborated with renowned artists in the creation of this work of art.
The reception hall is adorned with 20 marble mosaics, overlooked by a four-sided dome, which ends in a magnificent suspended lantern, the work of master glassworker Jacques Simon. The reading room is embellished by a zenithal stained glass window by Jacques Gruber, depicting an open book bearing the coat of arms of the city of Reims. The exhibition room is distinguished by its end-wood marquetry, while the catalog room perfectly reflects the Art Deco aesthetic.
This exceptional venue houses heritage collections that are unique in the world.
