The ancient basilica of Saint Vincent is the medieval abbey church of the Abbey of Saint Vincent, which was built in the city of Metz during the Gothic period. The building has been disused for Catholic worship since the 1980s.
The 13th and 14th centuries constitute one of the most prosperous periods in the history of Metz, which then had about 30,000 inhabitants, making it the largest urban concentration in Lorraine. Its fairs were very popular and its currency, the first in the region until 1300, was accepted throughout Europe. The current building is the last medieval remnant of the Abbey of Saint Vincent of Metz, which was rebuilt in the 17th and 18th centuries. It was built at the same time as the Cathedral of Metz, while the episcopal city gradually appropriated the rights of a "free city" of the Holy Roman Empire, despite the power of the local clergy.
