St. Gregory's Monastery

The monastery of St. Gregory, or Monastery St. Gregorius, also known as Abbey Münster im Gregoriental, was a Benedictine monastery in the city of Münster in Alsace. It was dedicated to Gregory the Great. It existed until the secularization in 1791. The buildings were largely destroyed during World War I.
Around 660-675, the monastery was founded during the reign of Duke Eticho. In 826, the confirmation of immunity took place. The Staufer emperors Frederick I and Frederick II granted the monastery rich donations. In 1235, the monastery received jurisdiction over the Gregoriental and the city of Münster and became an Imperial Abbey.
