Cour de Lorraine

Formerly a noble residence, the property became in 1726 that of the Thierry family from Lorraine, hence the name of this building. In 1754, Jean-HenriDollfus, co-founder of the first painted canvas factory, bought the house and probably gave it the appearance we know it. He set up a painted canvas factory in the outbuildings. Thereafter, the textile companies follow one another, until the fire of 1870. This elegant building, with its symmetrical facade and pediment pierced by an oculus, has a very beautiful central front with magnificent sculpted decorations. In particular, above the central bay on the first floor is the head of Mercury, god of commerce, which naturally protects a building dedicated to production and trade, as well as above the porch, the lion's whelp. The building is entirely built in pink sandstone, which is rare in Mulhouse where Brunstatt limestone dominates. The building was acquired by the city in 1876 to house a school, a function it still has today.
