Casemate Ruquet was a bunker in World War II that was part of the Atlantic Wall. The casemate, located near Les Moulins in the French commune of Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer, became famous for establishing the first American headquarters of the troops that had landed on Omaha Beach.
The casemate was part of Widerstandsnest 65, which was located in the Easy Red sector. The armament consisted of a 50 mm anti-tank gun. After the landings of the Allied forces on Omaha Beach were successful, WN-65 was surrounded and the gun destroyed. Around 10:30 a.m., the twenty Germans in the casemate surrendered and the passage to the hinterland was cleared via the so-called "Beach Exit E 1". Immediately, the way was cleared for military vehicles. "Beach-exit E 1" became the main exit for vehicles on the first day of landing. Casemate Ruquet was used by the local commanders to set up a headquarters.
