Beschrijving

Sigolsheim, an Alsatian village with a rich past marked by the conflicts of its history.

In this valley, watered by the Weiss river, a tributary of the Fecht, in 680 AD, a German named Sigwald or Sigold is said to have established his dwelling, which in turn led to the creation of the village bearing his name, Sigolsheim or villa de Sigold.

Numerous abbeys, attracted by the reputation of its wines, succeeded in obtaining donations from the Carolingian era onwards. This explains why Sigolsheim already had three chapels in the 9th century, one of which was founded by Saint Richarde, wife of Emperor Charles the Fat, and later became the village parish church. The Romanesque church of Saint Pierre et Paul is located on the Route Romane d'Alsace. It was severely damaged during the Second World War, then rebuilt to once again stand proudly in the heart of the village.

The village is dominated by the Nécropole Nationale, a place of remembrance that bears witness to the violent confrontations during the liberation of the Colmar pocket in the winter of 1944-1945. 1,589 soldiers of the First Army are buried on the "bloody hill" (Blutberg for the Germans). An American flag also flies from an American monument, erected in 1995 in honor of the American soldiers who died in Alsace for freedom.

A land of famous vintages, wine has been produced here since Merovingian times. Sigolsgeim boasts three Grand Crus: Mambourg, Marckrain and Furstentum. Gewurztraminer, Riesling, Pinot Gris and a little Muscat are produced on these three excellent terroirs. Take the Mambourg wine trail to discover it on foot.
