Katzenthal is a charming, authentic village nestled in a beautiful valley. This wine-growing town is also known as the "valley of the cats".
Traces of human presence date back to prehistoric times, and the first mention of the village dates from 1185. Over the centuries, the village has enjoyed a rich and lively history. The Second World War, in particular the terrible fighting in the Poche de Colmar, was particularly significant, as Katzenthal was almost completely destroyed. Reconstruction brought peace and quiet back to the village.
The village is dominated by the Wineck castle, built at the end of the 12th century. It offers a superb view over the vineyards surrounding the village and the surrounding Alsatian villages. Let yourself be charmed by this pleasant panorama.
It's also the starting point for numerous hikes, combining vineyards and forest. You can walk to the Galtz des Trois-Epis statue overlooking Katzenthal.
Famous for its vineyards, the town enjoys a particularly favorable microclimate, which has made the reputation of its famous grand cru Wineck Schlossberg. You can meet the winemakers, push open the doors of their cellars and taste their delicious wines (in moderation, of course!).
Want to visit Katzenthal with your family? Nothing could be simpler: the tourist office offers you a fun walk "along the valley of the cats", where you can solve riddles while discovering the area. The route booklet with age groups suitable for children is available from the tourist office.
