This kiosk in the town of Abbeville is linked to a massacre at the beginning of the Second World War. On 20 May 1940, at the beginning of the Second World War, twenty-one prisoners, including the Belgian Verdinaso leader Joris Van Severen, were executed in cold blood by French soldiers here in the French town of Abbeville at the kiosk. They were part of the persons arrested in May 1940 by order of the Belgian government and deported to the south of France on the so-called Ghost trains . Fifty-seven others were saved. This massacre received a lot of attention, partly due to German propaganda. Some French officials were sentenced to death by the German occupiers. But when the chances of war turned, attention quickly disappeared. In Abbeville there is still a taboo around the affair to this day. The drama can not be separated from the sad fate of Abbeville himself, because the town on the Somme was hit hard by the war on that fateful day.
