A remnant of the old fortifications, it owes its name to the "big clock" installed in 1381 by Duke Robert for the people of the castle. From then on, it held a considerable place in the town, alerting the Barisiens of an enemy attack or fire, sounding the curfew, the opening of the market, or accompanying ceremonies.
Dear to the heart of the Barisiens, giving rhythm to their daily life, the tower is visible from all parts of the city. Three dials are successively installed on each side: the first in 1381, the second in 1608 for the inhabitants of the lower town and the last in 1752 for those of the upper town. The current dial facing the lower town was restored in 1994 according to the original design. The tower escaped dismantling in 1670 because of its usefulness, but its flank was heavily mutilated when the walls were destroyed. It then lost its circular aspect as well as its dial facing the castle. Only its foundations date back to the 12th or early 13th century. The upper part of the building had already been modified after the fires of 1500 and 1639. Its roof was restored again after a disaster in 1940.
At its feet, the eighty steps descend towards the lower town, a staircase restored in 1713 at the request of Jacques Stuart, "Chevalier de Saint-Georges" then host to the Duke of Bar.
This staircase was split in two when the avenue du Château was laid out in the 19th century.
