Protestant Temple of Maguelone Street

The temple of Maguelone Street is a religious building located at 25 Maguelone Street, in Montpellier. It was inaugurated on March 18, 1870. The parish is affiliated with the United Protestant Church of France. The first Reformed Church of Montpellier was established in 1560, with Guillaume Rondelet, a professor at the faculty of medicine, being one of its leaders. The first Grand temple was built in 1583. Rectangular in plan, it is located on the current Chabaneau square. The Petit temple was built at Saint-Côme square. The Petit temple was destroyed, on the orders of the intendant Basville, in 1670. The Grand temple, on the other hand, was destroyed in 1682, on the orders of Louis XIV, shortly before the revocation of the Edict of Nantes. Protestants had to carry out the destruction themselves within twenty-four hours of the royal order. Several pastors were executed on the esplanade, notably Claude Brousson in 1698, and Pierre Durand, brother of Marie Durand, in 1732. Services were initially banned in the city, with Protestants being required to go to Saint-Jean-de-Védas or Pignan. They were tolerated from the second half of the 18th century, with Jacques-Antoine Rabaut-Pomier, son of Paul Rabaut, serving as pastor from 1772 to 1792.
