The Familistère is a creation of Jean-Baptiste André Godin. Godin was also active in Brussels. He had a factory there to make cast iron stoves at the Wekhuizenkaai in Laeken. Things were going well and he wanted to invest in the betterment of the proletarian who worked for him.
His De Familistère is inspired by the work of Charles Fourier and an elaboration of the Phalanstère he designed, a commune in which workers live, work and recreate together. Fourier assumed that people can develop when they can follow their 'passions' (read: preferences) at any time of the day in all important areas of life. Commune dwellers would then be able to complement each other naturally.
