The parish of Saint-Yzans had been afflicted around 1854 by a typhoid epidemic. The parishioners and their parish priest asked the Virgin Mary for her protection, and she heard their pleas: the epidemic ceased. The column surmounted by a statue of the Virgin is an expression of gratitude to the Blessed Virgin. It was inaugurated in 1858 "in the midst of a huge crowd of no less than 3,000 people from neighbouring countries".
