The Lords of Podenas, vassals of Edward 1st Plantagenet, Duke of Aquitaine and King of England, built Château de Poudenas in the 13th century. Between Mézin and Sos, this vast edifice defends and overlooks the Gélise valley, the frontier between the sands of the Landes forest and the hillsides of Gascony. In the 16th century, the military fortification was transformed into a seigniorial residence, then, in the 17th century, into an Italian palace.
The architecture and surrounding landscape of Château de Poudenas are reminiscent of Tuscan villas. Take a stroll through the park, with its hundreds of species, including Atlas and Lebanese cedars, oaks, walnut trees and even cypresses dating back to the 17th century.
