Construction of the tower was completed during the reign of Valéran III of Luxembourg in the 14th century. At 22 meters high, its military function is highlighted by loopholes, gunports and machicolations. In the Middle Ages, the Valéran Tower was one of the city?s gateways. In the tower's rooms, prisoners have carved inscriptions on the walls, the most legible of which reads: "I was put in this infernal bread-and-water dungeon for having been accused of bringing back contraband tobacco. JFM 1759."
