Der Bau des Turms wurde unter der Herrschaft von Valeran III. von Luxemburg im 14. Jahrhundert vollendet. Er ist 22 Meter hoch und seine militärische Funktion wird durch Schießscharten, Kanonenschächte und Maschikulis angedeutet. Im Mittelalter war der Valeran-Turm eines der Eingangstore zur Stadt. In den Räumen des Turms wurden von den Gefangenen Inschriften in die Wände geritzt, darunter die lesbarste: "Ich wurde in diesen höllischen Kerker bei Wasser und Brot gesteckt, weil ich beschuldigt wurde, geschmuggelten Tabak mitgebracht zu haben. JFM 1759."
