De bouw van de toren werd voltooid tijdens het bewind van Valéran III van Luxemburg in de 14e eeuw. De toren is 22 meter hoog en zijn militaire functie wordt weerspiegeld in de schietgaten, kanonpoorten en machicoulis. In de middeleeuwen was de toren van Valéran een van de toegangspoorten tot de stad. In de kamers van de toren hebben gevangenen inscripties op de muren gekerfd, waarvan de meest leesbare luidt: "Ik ben in deze helse kerker op water en brood gezet omdat ik ervan beschuldigd werd smokkeltabak mee te hebben genomen. JFM 1759"
