The existence of the parish of Welferding can be traced back to the year 1221. It was the mother church of numerous villages until 1802, before being attached to Sarreguemines.
It was administered by the Benedictine monks of Tholey Abbey until the Revolution. The architecture of its church is of Romanesque influence; a priory serving as a residence for the monks.
The church was used as a depot for the military hospital that moved into the Tithes House during the Revolution. Damaged, it was rebuilt to devote itself to worship
Enlarged by the size of the choir, with an empire-style facade, a new onion-shaped bell tower reminiscent of that of the church of the abbey of THOLEY, the three naves united under a common roof, it is almost the external aspect of the church as the faithful can see it today.
The church is named St. Walfried after the patron saint of the parish. WALFRIED was archbishop of YORK in England in the 8th century. Crossing the region on his way to Rome, he stopped at his friend DAGOBERT II, King of Austrasia, in Metz.
Taking advantage of the favours of the Court of Metz, the Abbey of THOLEY gave the name of ST-WALFRIED to one of his possessions.
