The fountains are one of the original features of the city that deserves the trip for a more in-depth visit. Why this luxury for public fountains? Quite simply because the embellishment of the living environment began at the end of the 19th century and there was no lack of means: water in abundance and of recognised purity, municipal income of a good level, ... it didn't take much to get off the beaten track and instead of simple drinking troughs, real masterpieces were created!
Since 1860 the town has been covered with cast iron fountains in the Haute Marne: 12 in total, 11 of which are now classified as Historic Monuments
The subjects chosen are multiple and the guiding line is mainly inspired by Greco-Latin Mythology and allegories: 2 Diana, a Minerva, Concord, Autumn, Happiness, ... in the purest classical tradition and then there is the flagship work, the imposing fountain of the Four Lions looking like griffins, emblem of the town of Raon l'Etape
These fountains can be visited by guided tours all year round for groups by reservation.
