This house, which belonged to the Levasseur family in the 19th century (and probably in the 18th century), is a former mansion. Built in the 18th century on the foundations of an earlier house (from the 16th century, as far as can still be seen in some places), it is representative of Barisian bourgeois housing in the Age of Enlightenment.
In addition to its sober, elegant facade, the classical-style house retains much of its interior layout, with rooms arranged in a row and adorned with Louis XV-style panelling and fireplaces. The central open staircase dates from the early 18th century, but its archaic style is reminiscent of 17th-century staircases.
Like many of the houses in the Ville Haute district, the extensive cellars extend over 2 known underground levels, and a third has just been discovered.
While many of Bar-le-Duc's residences are organized in depth on rectangular plots, here this process is limited by the presence of Saint-Étienne church to the rear. There is no significant second building, even though stables once existed. The rear view is immediately animated by the silhouette of the church, whether in the garden or the attic.
