Chavanges

Occupation of the village dates back to antiquity, with the discovery of stone coffins. The village's name was first mentioned in 753, when the abbey of Montier la Celle owned property there. In the Middle Ages, the fiefdom of Chavanges belonged to (Montmorency) Beaufort, but the main lords were those of Le Châtelier, to whom the fiefdom of Chassericourt belonged. The Le Châtelier family originated from Chassericourt, then Chavanges belonged to the House of Thourotte in the 13th and 14th centuries, and to the House of Hangest in the 15th. Chavanges boasts a market hall dating from 1500, rebuilt in 1860 and recently restored. The communes of Chavanges and Chassericourt merged on June 5, 1965. Remnants of Chassericourt's past include the motte of the ancient fortified castle and the church of Saint Gengoul (patron saint of deceived husbands), dating from the 16th and 18th centuries. Chavanges church dates from the 12th/16th century. It features - 16th-century statues - a stoup from the same period - stained-glass windows - a high altar - and a 17th-century altarpiece.
