In the large cliff that overlooks the right bank of the Vézère upstream from Les Eyzies, the gigantic Prehistoric Shelter of Laugerie-Haute is the first of a large number of sites found downstream from the mouth of the stream Le Manaurie. Two kilometers after leaving Les Eyzies towards Périgueux, a sign indicates the site on the left.
Approximately 200 meters long, this shelter, one of the largest in the region, shows signs of occupation dating back to 25,000 BC. A very abundant flint tool set, a high-quality bone industry, and art objects have been discovered there and are displayed at the National Museum of Prehistory in Les Eyzies. A little lower down from the Laugerie-Haute Shelter, also visit the Laugerie-Basse Shelter, which has provided one of the finest collections of prehistoric movable art objects. Visits by reservation only.
