MONUMENT SCHLEITER

Inaugurated on September 27, 1936, under a sad light rain, the monument dedicated to Victor Schleiter was erected in a small square, avenue Garibaldi, at the junction of the two cities, the old renovated Verdun on the left, the new extension on the right. Both bear the mark of the mayor builder. Even though Verdun's reconstruction had begun with Edmond Robin, the first post-war mayor from 1919 to 1924, Victor Schleiter had been his predecessor's valuable and dynamic first deputy since the election of the first municipal team in 1919. This longevity in the city's affairs during the twenties definitively attached the person of Victor Schleiter to the reconstruction of Verdun.

On the left, the people of the ruins against a wall riddled with shrapnel impacts. Old men, women and children with serious faces recall Victor Schleiter's attachment to the many social works he presided over or administered: Large Families, Mutual and Social Insurance, Social Welfare, as well as the responsibilities he had in the Chamber of Deputies as vice-president of the Labour Commission and the Insurance and Social Welfare Commission.

On the right-hand side of the monument, the mayor builder is celebrated by the men, construction workers, against a background of smooth and well-squared stone blocks.
