The Purpurkopf is a small summit of 570 m in the Vosges massif located in the Magel valley and on which there is a millstone quarry and a fortified site whose dating varies between the end of the La Tène period and the early Middle Ages.
The first written mention of the mountain, dating from the early thirteenth century, calls it Burcberck, "the mountain of the castle". The name then changed to Burgbergkopf first, then became known as Burberkopf in the 19th century, before finally slipping to Purpurkopf.
