De Purpurkopf is een kleine top van 570 m van het Massief van de Vogezen, gelegen in de vallei van de Magel, waar zich een steengroeve van maalstenen en een versterkte plaats bevinden waarvan de datering varieert tussen het einde van de La Tène-periode en de vroege middeleeuwen.
De eerste schriftelijke vermelding van de berg, daterend uit het begin van de 13e eeuw, noemt deze Burcberck, "de berg van het kasteel". De naam verandert vervolgens eerst in Burgbergkopf en wordt in de 19e eeuw bekend als Burberkopf, alvorens uiteindelijk te evolueren naar Purpurkopf.
