THE CHAPEL SAINT MILDREDE

This chapel, rebuilt in 1702, in yellow brick, is considered one of the most beautiful in Flanders, built at the foot of the Merckeghem hill, near a stream fed by a spring with miraculous virtues. This place of worship owes its existence to the stay of Mildred, an English saint who lived in these parts in the 7th century.

Mildred, a Saxon princess, is sent to the Abbey of Chelles to carry out her novitiate. Having refused the marriage proposal of the Abbess's nephew, she is locked up by the Abbess in a bakery. Having escaped with a companion, she arrives in Millam and cares for the inhabitants affected by the Marsh fever. Returning to England, she enters the convent founded by her mother.

In 1780, the chapel acquired six paintings by the artist from Dunkirk, PIETERS, which depict the life of the Saint. She is invoked against fevers, but also by pregnant women or those wishing to have a child.
