Inaugurated in 1962 , this monument was built using cobblestones taken from a quay in the port of Dunkirk, which was trodden by British and French soldiers during Operation Dynamo.
The Battle of Dunkirk took place in May and June 1940 as part of the Western Campaign of World War II. During the German campaign in the west, the city of Dunkirk in northern France was the last evacuation port for the British Expeditionary Force, which was deployed in France in 1939–40 as part of the Western Allies' initial defensive strategy.
The British and French successfully defended the beachhead until they evacuated over 330,000 of their 370,000 soldiers during Operation Dynamo.
The city was captured by the German Wehrmacht on June 4, 1940.
