The Departmental Archives were born of the reforming and centralizing will of the revolutionary legislators
From the very beginning of the Revolution, they wanted to bring together in a single place all the papers and titles of the ecclesiastical institutions and administrations of the Ancien Régime that had been abolished. The aim was to give all citizens free access to the papers that now belonged to the nation.
However, since it was not possible to house all of the country's archives in Paris, the Directoire, by the law of 5 Brumaire An V (26 October 1796), ordered them to be collected in the chief towns of the départements. This text is the birth certificate of the departmental archives.
The mission of the Bouches-du-Rhône Departmental Archives is to preserve, communicate and promote the archival documents produced in the department from the 9th century to the present day
Equipped with a vast reading room allowing consultation of the originals, the Departmental Archives are also a place for cultural exchanges on the historical and human heritage, open to the issues of the district, the city and the territory.
They offer a varied programme of cultural activities, favouring free access and projects for individuals and schools, as well as for the public in the social field.
