CALVAIRE RUE SAINTE-ANNE A FAYL-BILLOT

This stone cross, comprising a square pedestal, a bare column and a cross, rises from a flower bed. This calvary was built to symbolize the site of the now-destroyed Sainte-Anne chapel. The Chapelle Sainte-Anne - the patron saint of Fayl-Billot?s many wine-makers in the 16th century - was used to house the remains of foreigners and unbaptized children. The calvary - and the chapel at the time - stood 150 m north of its current location, towards the salt shed, but was moved to prevent snow-clearing trucks from hitting it. Next door, the fountain has never been moved and has long been used as a cattle trough. Its source lies 100m to the north, not far from the old chapel.
