The decorations of the town hall are the work of the artist Jean Gabriel. They date from 1698 and are painted in the style of the Rhenish renaissance. The fresco is composed of allegorical figures (justice, faith, charity ...), coats of arms of the Swiss cities and cantons and various decorations. The walls were originally decorated to save money. On the south façade, the "Klapperstein" bears witness to the torture that women accused of gossiping could suffer. The message in German that accompanies it can be translated as "I am called the Stone of the gossips / Well known by the bad tongues / Who will take pleasure in dispute and quarrel / By the city will carry me". The richly decorated town hall is one of the emblems of the city, its paintings made Montaigne say that it is "a magnificent palace and all gilded".
