On the borders of Lorraine and Champagne, the city of Neufchâteau, once protected by a ducal castle, has flourished since the Middle Ages thanks to the cloth trade.
The city has been classified as the first remarkable heritage site of the Vosges. The richness of the town lies mainly in the buildings constructed between the 16th and 18th centuries and its two churches. The church of Saint-Christophe is home to a unique masterpiece in Europe: the Wiriot chapel with its aerial vaulting, equipped with ribs with hanging keys. The current cinema Le Scala has the particularity of being located in the wing of a former monastery, transformed into an Italian-style theater. The recently restored Renaissance staircase of the Town Hall can be visited free of charge during the opening hours of the Tourist Office.
A map is available to guide the visitor and explanatory desks are positioned at the main monuments. It is also possible to follow the audio-guided tour via the Cirkwi application. Every summer, the Tourist Office organizes thematic guided tours of the historic center and free tours are offered in the Saint-Nicolas church. The city of Neufchâteau completes this program with Les Estivales de Neufchâteau: a complete program of free outings around concerts, open-air cinema, shows, etc.
Neufchâteau is a real capital of stylish furniture and woodworking, and has been labeled a City of Art and Crafts since 2012, just like its neighbor, Liffol-le-Grand. Each year, the European Art Trades Days are an opportunity to bring together specialists and the general public around this theme.
A few steps away from Neufchâteau are also some unmissable sites:
- the birthplace of Joan of Arc in Domremy-la-Pucelle
- the basilica of Bois Chenu
- the Gallo-Roman site of Grand including one of the largest amphitheaters in Gaul, as well as a 232 m² mosaic.
The surrounding orchards offer quality fruits and allow abundant harvests of mirabelle plums, which will be transformed into jams, syrups, juices, alcohols and pies. Also, the pie, the apple, the mirabelle plum and the pâté lorrain have their festival.
