La Moncelle, a modest seigniory dating back to the 12th century, changed hands several times before entering the Principality of Sedan and becoming one of the country houses of La Marck and La Tour d'Auvergne in the 16th and 17th centuries. At the end of the 18th century, the Montagnacs were the last lords with the right of high justice. At the end of the 18th century, the Montagnacs were the last lords with the right of high justice. The Franco-German wars did not spare La Moncelle, who particularly suffered from the fighting in the valley of Givonne on 1st September 1870. The heroic resistance of the French forces on that day between La Ramorie and Montvillers, in the face of the Saxons and the Bavarians who overwhelmed them, was very deadly and for several days after the capitulation hundreds of bodies were gathered either in the improvised mass graves or in the cemeteries of the communes. The monument of French Remembrance, which is located here in the heart of the cemetery, was erected in memory of about 300 brave people who died for France on September 1, 1870. The sight of the graves of two Saxon officers next to this monument gives hope that the reconciliation between yesterday's enemies in Europe will set an example for the whole world.
