The German military cemetery was created by German troops on 11 April 1917 after the resumption of fighting at the initiative of the French. It contains the graves of those killed during the advance of August 1914 and the Battle of Reims in September and October 1914, but the majority of the dead are from the violent fighting in the Champagne region around the hills around Reims and the Chemin des Dames in April and May 1917, as well as from the offensive and defensive battles of the spring and autumn of 1918. The cemetery also houses the remains of the oldest German soldier who took part in the conflict.
