Il cimitero militare tedesco fu creato dalle truppe tedesche l'11 aprile 1917, in seguito alla ripresa dei combattimenti su iniziativa dei francesi. Il cimitero contiene le tombe di 5.376 caduti durante l'avanzata dell'agosto 1914 e la battaglia di Reims nel settembre e ottobre 1914, ma la maggior parte dei morti provengono dai violenti combattimenti nella regione della Champagne intorno alle colline che circondano Reims e sullo Chemin des Dames nell'aprile-maggio 1917, nonché dalle battaglie offensive e difensive della primavera e dell'autunno 1918. Il cimitero contiene anche i resti del più anziano soldato tedesco che ha partecipato al conflitto.
