Description

"Between the 12th and 13th centuries, the kings of Aragon, who owned a large part of the valley's fortifications, were gradually dispossessed of them by the bishops of Mende. Chanac was an important link in this struggle and fell into the hands of the bishop at the beginning of the 13th century.
The construction of the keep is situated between the end of the 12th and the beginning of the 13th century. The building, made of squared limestone rubble, has a relatively regular foundation and is built on 4 levels: a ground floor with barrel vaults, a first floor that used to be vaulted, a second floor that is now planed and a top floor with barrel vaults ...
This keep is the only vestige of a larger complex, the site having served as a summer residence for the bishops of Mende at the end of the 16th century. The important enlargements carried out at the end of the 17th or the beginning of the 18th century are only known from archival documents ..."
