Maison natale de Raymond Poincaré

From 1913 to 1920, Raymond Poincaré was President of the Republic. Born in Bar-le-Duc in 1860 at 35, rue du Docteur Nève, he was marked in his youth by the Prussian invasion of 1870. This memory will never leave him, hence his great vigilance towards Germany.
From the beginning of the war, he managed to impose the "sacred union" on the various political forces in the country. The powers of a President of the Republic at that time were however very limited. He had to leave the initiative to the successive military chiefs and presidents of the Council.
His interest in Lorraine and his attention to his home town never waned. Bruised by the German attack on Verdun, he travelled several times to the East. In Bar-le-Duc, his presence comforted civilians and soldiers. His wife herself supported the work of charitable associations. In February 1920, when he left his post as President of the Republic, at the end of a seven-year term, the Chamber of Deputies voted, without debate, for a law declaring that he had "well deserved the country". Raymond Poincaré did not give up public life, however. Shortly afterwards, he was elected senator and president of the General Council of the Meuse and was also president of the Council from 1922 to 1924 and from 1926 to 1929. Illness forced him to retire.
