The Tarn river originates at 1560 m of altitude, on the southern flank of the Mont Lozère, in the north of the commune of Pont-de-Montvert. It will present, on approximately 100 km of its Lozere course, a succession of profiles.
For most of its course, the Tarn is a river of gorges. These are located between the localities of Quézac and Le Rozier over a length of 53 km. The Tarn has marked seasonal fluctuations in flow, with winter-spring floods. Low water occurs in summer, from July to September.
The Tarn is classified in 1st category in Lozere. The river is home to many species of fish: trout, minnows, gudgeons, sculpin...
