"The so-called "tourmente" bell towers are limited to the fringes of Mont Lozère. Built in hamlets without churches, these structures were used for various occasions: angelus, knell, call for the communal school, prevention against hailstorms, sound signal to the attention of people lost in the fog.
Today, they are limited to the bell and the fires. These steeples are similar to the type of wall steeple with a single bay with a round arch and are erected on a rectangular base tapering towards the top.
Some are equipped with a small bell-ringer's box in the thickness of the base. Sometimes they have a small niche where a statue of the Virgin or a saint is placed, and they all have an iron or stone cross.
These works are from the 19th century. A heritage group linked to social and economic life may be associated with them.
