Mouzon is located in the Grand Est region, in the Ardennes department, at the gateway to Lorraine, Belgium and Luxembourg.Mouzon takes its name from Mosomagos, the Celtic word for "market on the Meuse". As early as the 10th century, a powerful Benedictine abbey brought the town to life for almost four centuries. Its abbey church (12th-13th centuries) is a masterpiece of the early Gothic age. Then came a succession of defensive buildings. All that remains of the first stone wall is the remarkable Tour Porte de Bourgogne (12th century). The city was besieged several times before the Treaty of the Pyrenees (1659) moved the national defenses further north and the Mouzon fortifications were dismantled (1673). Industry then developed: tanneries and mills, textiles and metallurgy. In 1783, the first wheat mill was transformed into a flour mill, and in 1881 Alfred Sommer founded the Mouzon factory, whose production evolved towards felt. Mouzon became one of Europe?s largest felt factories. This know-how has never ceased to evolve, and can be discovered today at the Musée-atelier du Feutre. Mouzon has retained a certain spirit and character, which you can feel as you wander through its narrow streets, navigate the Meuse River... or dip your hands in the wool.
