Eglise Saint-Hilaire

Located on the Place Carnot, in the heart of the city, the Rue de la Fausse Porte has the particularity of passing under the choir of the religious building through a beautiful stone vault. You may not know the text of Victor Hugo written in 1838 in which he gently mocks the bell tower of the church Saint-Hilaire: "The good architect took a square cap of priest or lawyer. On this square cap, he has built an inverted salad bowl; on the bottom of this bowl, which has become a platform, he has placed a sugar bowl, on the sugar bowl, a bottle, on the bottle, a sun stuck in the neck by the lower vertical beam; and finally, on the sun, a rooster skewered in the upper vertical beam. Assuming that he took a day to find each of these ideas, he would have rested on the seventh day. This artist must have been Flemish. Stained glass windows in the church of Saint-Hilaire: The association of the friends of the religious heritage of Givet has invested in the rehabilitation of the interior of the church of Saint-Hilaire in Givet with the project of equipping it with 18 new stained glass windows of contemporary style. The stained glass windows were created by the painter Catherine Roch from Hillerin and realized by the master glass workshop Simon Marcq from Reims. 18 stained glass windows are to be installed, each 5m high and 2m30 wide (8 in the choir and 10 in the nave). Already installed in the choir : "The Baptism" (right side) - "The Confirmation" (left side) In the nave : "Mary, mother of humanity" - "The Creation" - "Saint-Hilaire (left side) Next stained glass windows : "The Nativity" and "The Cross" (will be installed in autumn 2023) - "The Exile" and "Liberation" (will be installed in 2024).
