La Fère, nicknamed "the City of the Artilleryman" is one of the oldest cities in the North-East region
As early as 1720, the first Royal Artillery School was established there, housing a regiment of 4,000 men. Until 1993, the 41st regiment of marine artillery was based in the city. In memory of its heroic resistance during the wars, Paris offered it, in 1974, the statue of the artilleryman of the Pont de l'Alma, which now stands in the center of the current Place d'Armes, facing the barracks, classified as a historical monument.
