It was the discovery of a hot spring at the beginning of the 20th century that prompted the opening of the first health spa in Nancy. In 1909, visitors to the Exposition Internationale de l'Est de la France discovered an artesian borehole gushing a hot spring 800 meters below the surface. Louis Lanternier, a renowned architect and city councillor, planned to turn it into a large-scale spa.
After the Exhibition, a stone rotunda decorated with mosaics was erected on the site of the spring. At its center, an elegant fountain lets the water flow, whose benefits continue to delight the people of Nancy. As early as July 1911, the French National Academy of Medicine authorized the use of Nancy Thermal water, which was notably used to treat rheumatism and digestive disorders. In 1913, the spa was inaugurated. It boasted the largest mineral water pool in the world. But the Great War put a stop to Louis Lanternier?s ambitions.
The spa was listed as a Monument Historique in 2020.
More than 100 years later, the architects have completed Louis Lanternier?s project and juxtaposed the historic thermal baths building with a contemporary extension of the original design to create the Nancy Thermal complex. This facility offers a complete range of spa treatments on a single site. It offers a wide range of activities and services: thermal, sports, leisure, wellness and health.
The spa area is not yet accessible, but work is underway to ensure that you are welcomed in the best possible conditions.
