Saint Blaise la Roche

History

The village is recorded in 13th-century texts as Hiltwigsgerüte in German and S. Blasius ad rupem (Saint-Blaise-la-Roche in Latin). The village belonged to the Rathsaumhausen zum Stein family, lords of Ban-de-la-Roche, but the Counts of Andlau also had holdings there, which led to conflicts between the two families. The village successively became an episcopal fief of the bishopric of Strasbourg, then the property of the lords of Val-de-Villé, then of the barons of Bollwiller. It was finally bought by the Andlau family, who held it until the French Revolution. It remained part of the Vosges department until 1871, when Alsace was annexed and returned to William?s German Empire. In 1919, with the Treaty of Versailles, Saint-Blaise became part of Bas-Rhin
