The "Porte du Bas" allows you to enter the city center of Mutzig, located on the Alsace wine road, about 30 km from Strasbourg
Raised in 1559, the Porte du Bas (Untertor) remains one of the most remarkable vestiges of the medieval fortifications of the city. A Saint-Maurice, the city's coat of arms, painted in 1895, adorns the eastern side. Until 1775, it was preceded by an advanced work (barbican) which was replaced by a monumental arch demolished in 1894.
What is hidden in the tower? ... dungeons!
Mutzig was a city in the Middle Ages and justice was pronounced there. Trials of witchcraft and infanticide took place, which can be found in the town archives.
