Baltzenheim has been occupied since ancient times, but the village is first mentioned in 847 under the name Baldolfesheim. Baltzenheim was destroyed during the Thirty Years' War and razed to the ground during the siege of Vieux-Brisach. In the 18th century, the Rhine overflowed its banks on several occasions, and dyking work was undertaken in the 19th century. Baltzenheim was once devoted to fishing and agriculture, but has since turned to industry.
