Esquelbecq?s Saint-Folquin church dates back to the 10th century. Until the 17th century, it was constantly altered to become a typical Flanders "hallekerke". It features three naves of equal dimensions. It has been listed as a Monument Historique since July 20, 1945. The village church is dedicated to Saint-Folquin, Charlemagne?s first cousin and 15th bishop of Thérouanne, who died in Esquelbecq on December 14, 855. Saint-Folquin is invoked against fevers and for women in need of children.
The church was destroyed by fire in 1976 and rebuilt in 1978.
On the 1st floor of the steeple, an exhibition of religious objects and a film recount the history of the church and its fire in 1976. The bell tower of Saint-Folquin church is one of the few in the region to be open to the public and to have a carillon. Here, 23 bells chime typical local tunes every quarter-hour. Don't forget your cameras, because from up there you have a panoramic view of the Yser plain, the castle and the village square, which has retained its authentic Flemish character.
Visits to the church are free during Village Patrimoine© tours (calendar available from the Hauts de Flandre Tourist Office in Esquelbecq).
Guided tours for groups are also possible, on reservation at the Groups Department
