The Marguerite Duras Association was born in 1997, from the author's ties to the Pays de Duras.
Marguerite Duras' father was originally from the Lot-et-Garonne. As a teacher, he left to teach in Indochina where Marguerite was born in 1914. In 1921, sick, he returned to France and bought a house near Duras, Platier, where he died prematurely. Marguerite, his mother and his two brothers, came to live in this house from 1922 to 1924 and then in 1931 for the sale of the estate.
In 1943 Marguerite Duras published her first novel: Les Impudents. Upon publication, she left Donnadieu, her father's name and adopted Duras as her writer's name.
The association created in Duras the Marguerite Duras Center-Museum where permanent exhibitions are open. It organizes Biennials in even-numbered years and Rencontres Marguerite Duras in odd-numbered years.
Current exhibition: "Toute une vie j'ai écrit".
