Oltingue

Oltingue was the most populous of the 33 villages in the Ferrette seigneury before the Thirty Years' War. The village still bears the imprint of its ancient terraced cultivation, which gave pride of place to vines favored by a dry climate attributed to the village?s location at the foot of a hill, in the blind spot of atmospheric currents. The Ill river runs through the village, offering a wealth of sites to discover.

Attractions

- The Musée Paysan d'Oltingue: created in the 1970s, this half-timbered farmhouse houses collections assembled by Abbé Etienne Bilger (1901-1980), and provides an insight into how the people of Sundgau lived before the rapid evolution of the countryside in the 20th century.

- The church of Saint-Martin-des-Champs: the former mother church of three villages, classified as a Historic Monument and dating from the 14th century, it contains tombs from the 7th and 8th centuries and frescoes dating from before 1350 depicting Old Testament characters and saints.

- Saint-Martin church: built in 1824 by the bailiff of Ferrette, who found the church of Saint-Martin-des-Champs too small and, above all, too far away, it houses a Callinet organ classified as a Historic Monument in 1973. The church's magnificent interior furnishings are also waiting to be discovered.

- La Chapelle Saint-Brice: attested in 1361 and partially rebuilt in 1669, this isolated chapel is located 3 km north-east of the village of Oltingue, in a clearing. Saint-Brice was once a renowned pilgrimage site, appearing in 1576 on the map of Alsace as Saint-Brixi. In 1567, a hermitage stood near the chapel, today replaced by a farm inn that attracts many tourists in fine weather.
