Square des Trois Godets - Troyes

Description

The square owes its current name to a former hotel under the sign of the Trois-Godets . Quiet and shady, it is the ideal place to admire the chevet of the cathedral and the half-timbered houses, mainly from the 17th century.

At number 34, rue de la Cité, the course of the Meldançon, the stream that once lined the first wall of the Gallo-Roman city of Augustobona Tricassium and which has now disappeared, is marked out on the road with paving stones. The stream runs under the Hospice St Nicolas , which covered the stream when it was built in 1836. In the 15th century, slaughterhouses were built along the stream, then called massacreries, tueries or écorcheries. The Quai de l'abattoir on the banks of the Seine still bears his name.

The Pont Ferré house at no. 36 , typical of 16th-century Troyes, takes its name from the toll levied by the bishop until 1530 on the horseshoes of horses crossing the nearby bridge. At the back of this house, on the side of the Square des Trois Godets, a beautiful stone arch can be seen in the cellar, which once spanned the stream that ran under the building. is quiet and shady and the ideal place to admire the chevet of the cathedral and the half-timbered houses, mainly from the 17th century.
