Fortified walls of Bouogne-sur-mer

Description

Built in the 13th century, these are the best preserved ramparts in northern France.

Four gates lead to the typical fortified town with an exceptional heritage (crypt, castle, bell tower ...) and a number of administrative buildings (town hall, courthouse...).

The old town of Boulogne-sur-Mer has been surrounded by walls since Roman times and has an astonishing series of fortifications. Since the 2nd century, the town, situated in a strategic position, has tried to defend itself against invaders. Built between 1227 and 1231 by Count Philippe Hurepel, son of King Philippe Auguste, the current fortifications were built on top of the successive enclosures of the Roman camp of the “Classis Britannica”. Even today, Boulogne-sur-Mer is one of the most representative medieval fortifications in the Hauts de France region.

The fortifications of Boulonnais have evolved over the centuries and have left an exceptional historical testimony and offer a surprising walk. The four gates, whose location has hardly changed since ancient times, give access to the walkway, a very pleasant walk that offers a beautiful view of the entire city and the flower gardens at the foot of the ramparts. The old watchtower, once inhabited by soldiers, is a delight for joggers, walkers and other lovers of old stones.
