Eglise Saint-Remi - Charleville-Mézières

Description

The church was built in 1860 and is located a stone's throw from the Place Ducale and the Place Jacques-Felix , formerly the Place de l'Agriculture.

The neo-Romanesque church is the second largest church in the city .

The church is located on the exact site of the chapel of the great priory of the Christian militia founded by Charles de Gonzaga. Originally there was a first project in neo-Gothic style, designed by the architect Gautiez, which was rejected. The current church has a high cross vault. A triforium runs along the nave, making the Gothic architectural style visible in the building.

The church was originally dedicated to Mary , but was renamed Saint-Rémi when Charleville merged with five neighbouring towns in 1965.

The two original bells , Clémentine and Sophie, each weighing over 1,200 kg, were melted down and replaced by the Germans during World War II. The church's organ pipes were requisitioned and removed by the Germans on 4 August 1917.

The rose window of the portal , the work of the workshop of Maréchal de Nancy, won a medal at the London Exhibition in 1862.
